The Society was named in honor of the Swiss developmentalist, Jean Piaget, who made major theoretical and empirical contributions to our understanding of the origins and evolution of knowledge. The Society’s aim is to provide an open forum, through symposia, books, our journal, and other publications, for the presentation and discussion of Swiss biologist and psychologist Jean Piaget (1896-1980) observed his children (and their process of making sense of the world around them) and eventually developed a four-stage model of how the mind processes new information encountered. He posited that children progress through 4 stages and that they all do so in the same order. Jean Piaget used the three mountains task (see picture below) to test whether children were egocentric. Egocentric children assume that other people will see the same view of the three mountains as they do. According to Piaget, at age 7 thinking is no longer egocentric, as the child can see more than their own point of view.

We explain each of the four stages and explore strategies based on Piaget’s theory for Piaget’s Stages of Cognitive Development. Piaget’s theory of cognitive development is divided into 4 stages: The sensorimotor stage, which is the zero to two year stage; The stage of preoperational, which is the two to seven year old stage; The stage of concrete operational, which is the seven to eleven year old stage; The stage formal operational stage, which is the stage from eleven onwards. Piaget believed that there is a connection between cognitive and moral development. His research suggests that as a child’s ability to think and reason develops, so does their ability to make moral and logical decisions. Jean Piaget.
